Paying employees is not as difficult as it first appears. Her Majesty's Revenue and Customs (HMRC) even provide you with facilities to run a small payroll on-line. For a greater number of employees, or where the the pay calculation is more complicated, it might be worth investing in commercial software such as Sage Payroll.

From 2013 HMRC are introducing a system called Real Time Information (RTI) which requires all businesses to report on-line whenever they make payroll payments to an employee. You need to ensure that your systems are set up to meet this reporting requirement.
